Regardless, Demon’s Souls’ incredible boss fights, fantastic world design, and brilliant use of the series’ multiplayer concepts have not aged a day.

Retooling and improving animations can be a tricky prospect, especially for a game like Demon’s Souls where players enjoy the specific way that combat feels. OK8386 GAME was able to update these animations without them drastically affected the feel or cadence of combat in a detrimental way. They knew that they were in charge of bringing the game into 2020 and not changing the fundamental things that made Demon’s Souls the cult hit that it was back on the PS3 when it was released in 2009.

That depends on who you ask, but there were times when I was begging for Bluepoint to take the wheel and make this game its own. That’s hardly the only way that the power of next-gen gaming improves Demon’s Souls. The PS5’s SSD eliminates Demon’s Souls‘ often crippling load times, which isn’t just a great quality of life improvement but makes soul and resource farming far more efficient.

The Demon’s Souls remake was announced back in June at Sony’s PS5 reveal event. The ten-year-old title has been completely remade with an impressive visual upgrade, which definitely helps to revitalize the original Souls game so that it can appeal to the modern generation of players. Although the original reveal did not emphasize any major gameplay differences from the initial release apart from the complete graphical overhaul, Demon’s Souls practically looks like a brand new adventure. The Dragon Bone Smasher can be found just after entering the Demon’s Souls Dragon God boss arena, but it requires pure white World Tendency to find. This weapon also gives you slightly more protection against fire damage, making it almost like another piece of armor. This will help you make it through certain levels with a lot of enemies that use fire, such as the Flamelurker boss encountered in the game.

The visual upgrade is a jump beyond the other Soulsborne games. On that note, a flash back to Demon’s Souls’ frame-rate on PS3 is a great reminder that there is a lot of room for improvement. From the very first areas in Boletaria, you could count on a drop to 12 frames per second every time a dragon wreaks havoc on those initial bridges. The combination of multiple enemies, broad draw distance, and lots of full-res alpha for fire, really hammered Sony’s machine. And while there’s really no confirmation on the remake’s frame-rate targets, the 30fps trailer encode at least shows no drops.

You’ll need to complete the Shrine of Storms and acquire the Storm Ruler — but this is the best place to farm souls, and it’s completely trivial to earn as many as you’ll ever need by returning here.
